State police report no fatalities over New Year’s holiday

The Pennsylvania State Police investigated 481 motor vehicle crashes over the New Year’s Day weekend, with no fatalities reported and 108 people injured.

From Dec. 30, 2022-Jan. 1, 2023, state troopers arrested 356 people for driving under the influence during the enforcement period.

Troopers also wrote a total of 12,445 citations for various traffic violations to include speeding, seat belt and child seat infractions.

The crash data for this past holiday weekend shows there were 10 more crashes than the 471 last year that included two fatal crashes, and 97 people injured, 11 less than this year.

In terms of alcohol-related crashes, the 51 this year is 10 more than last year’s 41. A year ago, one of those crashes was an alcohol-related fatal crash.

State police said the enforcement data comparison from last year to this year is as follows (last year’s totals in parentheses): DUI arrests, 356 (278); speeding citations, 4,126 (3,632); child seat citations, 378 (310); and other citations, 7,874 (6,223).

A breakdown of the enforcement data locally:

Troop L

– Berks, Schuylkill and Lebanon counties: crash data – 26 crashes, 5 persons injured and 4 alcohol-related crashes; enforcement data - 25 DUI arrests, 217 speeding citations, 22 seat belt citations, 5 seat belt warnings, 381 other citations and 17 criminal arrests.

Troop M – Bucks, Lehigh and Northampton counties: crash data – 33 crashes, 5 persons injured, and 2 alcohol-related crashes; enforcement data – 30 DUI arrests, 178 speeding arrests, 8 child seat citation, 8 seat belt citations, 15 seat belt warnings, 567 other citations and 20 criminal arrests.

Troop N – Carbon, Columbia and Monroe counties: crash data – 23 crashes, 7 persons injured and 4 alcohol-related crashes; enforcement data – 29 DUI arrests, 372 speeding arrests, 11 child seat citations, 32 seatbelt citations, 13 seatbelt warnings. 895 other citations and 22 criminal arrests.

These statistics cover only those incidents investigated by the state police and do not include incidents to which other law enforcement agencies responded.
