Palmerton man facing charges after leading police on chase

A Palmerton man is facing numerous charges, including driving under the influence of a controlled substance, following a chase by state police at the Bethlehem barracks.

Shawn Shupp, 43, has been charged with fleeing and eluding police, DUI, driving while his license is suspended due to a DUI charge, with an enhancement of refusing to submit to a blood test, and other Motor Vehicle Code violations.

They stem from an incident that began on Route 873 in Lehigh Township, Northampton County, and continued on Lehigh Drive in Lower Towamensing Township and Palmerton and ended in Bowmanstown.

Police said at 9:17 p.m. Dec. 17 they observed a 1998 GMC traveling on Route 873 toward Route 248. The vehicle had an off-road LED light bar illuminated when it passed a state police vehicle and continued straight in the right lane.

Police said the driver identified as Shupp, left Route 248 at the Bowmanstown exit, turning right onto Mill Street, crossing over White and Apple and stopping in front of Shupp’s residence on Ore Street where he was taken into custody.

Police said during the pursuit, Shupp called his girlfriend and let her know he was driving home and a policeman was trying to stop him.
