Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 22

Three area basketball teams posted non-league victories in action on Thursday.

Lehighton and Panther Valley earned wins in boys play, while the Northwestern girls were also victorious.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pen Argyl-Lehighton

Lehighton’s freshmen connection of Cole Dietz and Blake Roberts combined for 27 points to help the Indians gain a 45-42 non-league victory over Pen Argyl.

Dietz finished with a team-high 14 points, while Roberts added 13.

Both players hit three-pointers during the fourth quarter to help Lehighton hold off a Green Knights rally.

Pen Argyl received a game-high 20 points from Cayden Tyminski.

The win upped the Indians record to 4-5, while Pen Argyl dropped to 2-6.

Lehighton also won the JV game, 33-29.

So. Columbia-Panther Vy.

A huge second quarter helped Panther Valley pull away from Southern Columbia and post a 70-47 non-league victory.

Stephen Hood hit four three-pointers in the second frame as the Panthers, who ended a two-game losing streak, outscored the Tigers by a 23-7 margin.

Hood finished with a game-high 23 points for PV, who saw 11 different players score in the contest. Chase Weaver added 12 points, while Drew Kokinda chipped in with 10.

Southern Columbia was led by Brian Britton’s 12 points.

The Panthers improved to 6-2, while the Tigers fell to 1-2.

Pleasant Valley-Liberty

Pleasant Valley led after the first quarter, but it was all Liberty after that as the Hurricanes rolled to a 72-42 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Jarod Moore scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the opening frame as the Bears earned a 21-20 advantage.

Liberty’s Nate Rivera, however, poured in 11 of his game-high 25 points in the second to put the home team ahead for good.

PV managed just 10 points during the second half and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

The Bears are now 4-5 on the season, while Liberty sits at 5-2.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Blue Mtn.-Northwestern

Northwestern used a solid second-half performance to pull out a 45-41 non-league win over Blue Mountain.

After trailing 24-21 at half, the Tigers stole the momentum in the second half and outscored the Eagles 24-17 the rest of the way.

Northwestern’s Cara Thomas led all scorers with 16 points, while Paige Sevrain finished with 15.

Kylie Conway topped Blue Mountain with 11 points.

Northwestern improved to 8-1, while the Eagles fell to 4-2.

Lehighton-Pen Argyl

Pen Argyl started slow but recovered to gain a 46-32 non-league victory over Lehighton.

The Indians jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but Jillian Marko tallied eight of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter to help the Green Knights take the lead.

The winners, now 4-4, also received 16 points from Ellie Wallbillich.

Lehighton’s Charli McHugh finished with a team-high 12 points, while Olivia Serfass chipped in with nine.

The loss dropped the Indians to 3-6.
