No injuries following structure fire in Mahoning Township

No one was injured during a garage fire Tuesday night in Mahoning Township just a short distance from a structure fire Sunday morning lit by a squatter.

Mahoning Valley Fire Chief Mark Ebbert said firefighters were called out to 1545 Blakeslee Boulevard Dr. East around 6 p.m.

Ebbert said there were heavy flames coming out of the basement area of the structure.

He said the structure suffered heavy damage throughout all three levels of the garage, and added that it was basically gutted.

Ebbert said no one was inside the garage, though there were occupants home at the residence.

He said firefighters had the fire under control within about an hour.

Ebbert said the cause of the fire is under investigation by a state police fire marshal and Mahoning Township Police Department.

He said also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton Fire Department, East Penn Fire Department, Franklin Township Fire Department, and Jim Thorpe Fire Department, along with Mahoning Valley Ambulance.

“The most important thing is nobody was injured,” Ebbert said.

The fire was in close proximity to a structure fire that broke out just before 10 a.m. Sunday to the rear of an abandoned home in the 1400 block along Route 443.

Fire officials determined that fire was set by a squatter living in the garage.
