Smokehouse catches fire at Mahoning meat market

A meat market in Mahoning Township was damaged after a smokehouse caught fire Friday afternoon.

Mahoning Valley Fire Chief Mark Ebbert said firefighters were called out to Heintzelman’s Meat Market at about 2 p.m. for a structure fire.

Ebbert said the fire extended into the second-story soffit in the main building, as well as the roof on the storage side of the main building.

He said all the employees were evacuated, and there were no injuries.

Ebbert said there was moderate damage to the roof area, and that the second and first floors also had water damage.

He said the store itself was not affected.

“Obviously, the most important thing is that there were no injuries, and the store was able to remain open and is open for business,” Ebbert said.

Ebbert said the cause of the fire is accidental.

He said they were assisted on scene by the Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, Mahoning Police Department and Lehighton Police Department.
