The Panther Valley and Palmerton boys both improved to 5-0 with league victories on Monday.

In girls basketball action, Marian, Northwestern and Palmerton all continued their strong starts to the season.

Meanwhile, in wrestling, Lehighton routed Northern Lehigh.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Palmerton-Southern Lehigh

Palmerton remained undefeated after edging Southern Lehigh 54-50 in a Colonial League contest.

Brayden Hosier and Matt Machalik combined to score 17 of the Blue Bombers’ 19 fourth-quarter points to hold off the Spartans.

Hosier had nine of his 19 points in the final frame, while Machalik added eight of his game-high 20.

The win upped Palmerton’s record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Southern Lehigh (1-2; 1-1) received 11 points from both Jonah Shaw and Max Pristas.

Panther Valley-Pine Grove

A huge game from Stephen Hood helped Panther Valley gain a 65-56 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove to remain unbeaten.

Hood scored 31 points, 20 of them coming in the first half, and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Panthers improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.

PV maintained its lead in the fourth quarter by going 10-of-13 at the foul line.

Chase Weaver added 13 points and nine assists to the winning cause, while the Cardinals (1-4; 0-2) received 18 points from Brandon Unger.

Northwestern-Salisbury

After starting the season with three straight losses, Northwestern won its second in a row after a 38-36 Colonial League decision over Salisbury.

The Tigers went 9-of-11 at the foul line during the fourth quarter to help outscore the Falcons 17-12 and erase a three-point deficit.

Gavin Nelson led a balanced Northwestern attack with 10 points. Ethan Kozlowski added nine points, while Mason Bollinger contributed eight.

Salisbury received a game-high 11 points from Thomas Lovelidge.

The Tigers are now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the league, while the Falcons dropped to 1-3 and 1-1.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Pottsville used a second-half rally to hand Tamaqua a 50-42 Schuylkill League defeat.

The Blue Raiders held a six-point advantage after two quarters, but the Crimson Tide outscored them 32-18 the rest of the way.

Nick Chivinski led the winners with 14 points. For Tamaqua, Noah Mateyak tallied a team-high 12 points, while Corey Dillon added 10.

The Raiders fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the league, while Pottsville now sits at 3-2 and 2-0.

Marian-Wyoming Seminary

Marian battled Wyoming Seminary, but ended up dropping a 54-51 non-league contest.

Julius Currie scored a team-high 19 points, including five three-pointers, for the Colts. Chris Chambers also contributed 12.

The winners were paced by Isaiah Stull’s 20 points.

The loss left Marian with a 1-3 record.

Mahanoy Area jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 62-26 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Kadin Styka scored all 14 of his points in the first half as the Golden Bears raced to a 46-16 advantage. The winners also received 12 points from Brady Alansky.

The Wreckers were paced by Dylan Buck, who scored seven points.

Mahanoy improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, while Weatherly fell to 0-4 and 0-2.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marian-Wyoming Seminary

Marian took control of a close game in the third quarter and went on to a 55-36 non-league victory over Wyoming Seminary.

The Fillies (4-1), who suffered their only loss of the season to Allentown Central Catholic on Saturday, bounced back in impressive fashion.

Marian built a double-digit lead after three quarters and then erupted for 18 points in the final stanza to put the game away.

Frankie Martinelli led Marian with 19 points. Aliya Tikhtova added nine.

Cassidy Skoranski paced Wyoming Seminary with 13 points.

Cara Thomas’ 19-point performance highlighted Northwestern’s 62-14 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

Thomas caught fire in the opening quarter, as she poured in 15 points to help the Tigers grab a 25-5 lead. Teammate Brook Balliet chipped in seven of her 12 points in the stanza.

Destiny Nales led the Falcons with seven points.

Northwestern moves to 4-1 overall (2-1 CL), while Salisbury slips to 0-2 (0-2).
