Schuylkill Co. transit prepares for move

Schuylkill Transportation System expects to move into its new $33 million building by mid-January, Executive Director Gary Martinaitis told county commissioners Wednesday.

Officials broke ground for the 80,000-square-foot facility at 300 Wade Road in St. Clair, in August 2020.

Currently, STS is housed in the Saint Clair Industrial Park.

The new building will have indoor covered storage, modern maintenance bays, and equipment along with much needed administrative space.

It will also provide Compressed Natural Gas fueling for the STS system.

The project is funded by the Federal Transit Administration, the state Department of Transportation, and the county.

The building “just about completed, Martinaitis said.

“We hope to move in mid-January. We’re kind of cramped where we are now. This will be a big improvement.

He said STS is planning an open house event to celebrate the move in.

The new facility also will serve as a backup to the county 911 center. It will include a spacious training room.

“(911 director) Scott (Krater) and his folks can move right in there with their portable units and set them up on the workstations that are in that training room, and operate the 911 center completely from that facility,” Martinaitis said
