2 firefighters killed in West Penn blaze

Two volunteer firefighters died after battling a blaze at a home in the village of Clamtown, West Penn Township, late Wednesday afternoon.

The men were identified as Marvin Gruber, 59, and Zachary Paris, 36. Both served with the New Tripoli Community Fire Co. in Lehigh County.

A third and yet-unidentified person was found dead on property behind the home at 1121 Clamtown Road, state police said.

The two firefighters were removed from the scene and taken by ambulances to St. Luke’s-Miners campus in Coaldale and pronounced dead just after 6 p.m.

The Frederick County, Maryland, Facebook page notes that Paris was also a member of the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service. He served as assistant chief in New Tripoli, and is survived by his wife and two young daughters. Gruber was a firefighter with New Tripoli.

State police, who are investigating with West Penn Township Police, said fire crews were summoned to the address just before 4 p.m. for a report of fire with entrapment.

Numerous mayday calls were made while emergency responders tackled the blaze and searched the three-story single home for any occupants.

State police said the two people who lived at the home escaped without injury.

Crews continued to fight the stubborn blaze well into the late evening hours.

Volunteer firefighters from at least three counties responded, with apparatus lining a long stretch of Clamtown Road, which is also Route 443. Tanker trucks brought water to the site.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was also at the scene.

Those who responded to the scene included fire personnel from West Penn Township, East Penn Township, Summit Hill, New Tripoli, Germansville, Lynnport, Nesquehoning, Lansford, Coaldale, Tamaqua, Landingville, Mahanoy City, New Ringgold, Hometown, Mahoning Valley, Port Clinton, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill Haven, Walnutport, New England Valley, Auburn and Deer Lake. Schuylkill EMS, Penn Mahoning Ambulance and Tamaqua Rescue, Lehighton Ambulance and the Red Cross were also on site.
