Eucharist series

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church began its series on the Eucharist this past Wednesday, as led by the Rev. Bob Simon. It continues tonight with session two in McCawley Hall at 6 p.m. with dinner right after the Vigil Mass for Immaculate Conception.

Parish members are welcome.

PVEN meeting

Involved churches and representatives are reminded that the PVEN representatives from various member churches will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Mission meal

West End Mission is serving its next meal at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Brodheadsville.

Meeting change

The Western Pocono Lions Club December meeting has been changed from the third Thursday to the second Thursday, tomorrow. That change is only for December. In January 2023, the club will again meet on the third Thursday at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville.

The club meeting begins at 6 p.m.

Seniors menu

The West End Senior Center members at meeting at Zion Lutheran can order spinach & Swiss egg/tuna salad for Friday or beef & broccoli/cobb salad for lunch on Wednesday by calling the site manager one day in advance by 11 a.m. The cost for said meal will be picked up by the site manager.

Primetimers meet

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God church’s Primetimers are scheduled to meet at noon on Friday. Decorating Christmas wreaths is on the agenda. Participants are reminded to bring a dish to share and invite a friend.

The wreaths will be provided.

Zion caroling

On Friday carolers from Zion Lutheran are planning to have a light supper at the church and then go caroling at the church’s homebound members and friends.

Breakfast & cookies

McMichaels Methodist is offering a complete breakfast, including beverages, from 8 to 10 a.m., Saturday. The invitation is for the entire community.

While there, folks can purchase homemade cookie by the basket. They will be available from 8 to 11 p.m. until sold out.

They are yummy and reasonably priced is the word.

SFRC food pantry

Effort UMC’ Supplemental Food Resource Pantry will be open for a regular and a Christmas food distribution from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The pantry is seeking donations of any non-perishable item such as canned goods, pasta, mac-n-cheese, cereal, oatmeal, etc.

Yarn donations

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at Our Lady Queen of Peace church is seeking full skeins of knitting yarn.

Donations may be brought to the parish office.

Community supper

There will be a Community Supper once again at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. It will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Knit & crochet

Zion’s needle group for knitting and crocheting will meet again at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The 4th Tuesday meeting of the month for December has been cancelled.

New members are welcome.

Soap making

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God church celebrated Mission Sunday this past Sunday. The offering received will provide supplies and training in the soap-making project for the women in the village of Olony Uganda.

When a church team was ministering in Olony, the women expressed the need they had for soap.

The church plans to support those ladies in learning how to make their own soaps to help with this need by raising at least $930. That will change the lives of many.

Santa’s coming

The man with the beard and red suit is coming to Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday. One needs to have been registered. He’s coming to Polk Township from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday.

Christmas doings

There will be caroling, cookies and crafts from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville.

Weather permitting, attending folks will be caroling outside to nearby neighbors, so the advice is to dress accordingly. Crafts and music will be inside for those who cannot join the caroling or in case of inclement weather.

Santa visit

The American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, is hosting a children’s Christmas party for children with Santa, for ages new baby to age 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday. One must sign up at the post on Fairgrounds Road.

There is a limit of 60 children.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting a Community Sunday Supper at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Polk Tree Lighting

The 26th annual Polk Tree Lighting will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Polk Memorial and Adam’s Faith Garden at Salem-St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville.

There will be crafts, snacks, stories and songs. There will be special guests including Santa, the Grinch and the West End Fair Queen, Brianna Shupp.

One lucky child will be chosen at random to help light the tree.

Attending people are asked to bring individually wrapped snack items that will be provided to Touch of Home to send to service men and women overseas.

Since the event is outdoors folks should dress appropriately.

OTOH meeting

Operation: Touch of Home will be meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

Soup sale ends

Effort UMC’s last soup sale for the year is ending this coming Wednesday.

The soups available are broccoli & cheese and savory pot roast.

The pick-up date is Dec. 18 after the church services.

TOPS meeting

The TOPS group meeting at Salem-St. Paul’s in Kresgeville gathers at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

Eldred meeting

The Eldred Township Planning Commission next scheduled meeting will be next Wednesday in light of the cancelled meeting previously scheduled for Nov. 9.

Lights festival

The West End Food Pantry, Kunkletown, is hosting a Festival of Lights at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert from 5 to 8 p.m. next Wednesday.

The event is free, including all activities.

Las Posadas set

A colorful pageant symbolizing the biblical journey of Mary and Joseph searching for shelter before the birth of Jesus will take place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Brodheadsville Dec. 14.

That journey begins outside in prayer and song and ends in McCawley Hall for a traditional festival including dinner.

PVHS concert

The Pleasant Valley High School Winter choral concert will be presented at 7 p.m.

Dental screenings

Pocono Mountains United Way shares the news that free oral screenings are now available for children in Monroe County between the ages of 1 and 5 through the Healthy Start Early Childhood Screening program. That is due to a partnership with Northampton Community College’s Dental Hygiene Program and Pennsylvania’s Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioners.

PVI contest ends

The PVI Library is hosting a cardboard gingerbread house contest. Entries may be dropped of at the PVI library until Monday, Dec. 12, the deadline.

Blood drive

There will be an American Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m., Dec. 20, at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert. Appointments are still available as of column deadline time. To make an appointment go to www.redcrossblood.org.
