Nesquehoning rang in the Christmas season on Friday with its annual tree lighting, held at the borough’s Christmas tree on West Catawissa Street.
Residents gathered at the tree, which was planted several years ago by the Nesquehoning Lions Club, as a living symbol of Christmas.
Lois Kuba, president of the Nesquehoning Historical Society, welcomed everyone to the event.
The group also honored the late Frank Jacobs, a longtime councilman and Lions Club member who helped start the tradition.
Councilwoman Mary Fox said Frank always tried to find an outdoor star to put on the tree but was never able to find one that would work.
She said Jen Brown was able to order one and this year, a star dedicated to Jacobs was included on the tree.
“Frank would love it,” Fox said of the star.
A tradition Jacobs started years ago was also continued. A Christmas wreath was placed at the war memorial near the tree.
Following a short presentation, Pastor John Mylecraine of Meed’s United Memorial Church pushed the button and lit the tree.
Tanya Erdman provided musical selections.
Everyone was then invited back to Meed’s for refreshments and caroling.
