Bombers hoping for postseason success

It’s a simple goal, and a common one.

But it’s one - that if met - will result in plenty of success.

The Palmerton boys basketball team, coming off a strong season from a year ago, wants to get better each day and every game during the regular season.

If that happens and the Blue Bombers build on consistent play, wins will continue into late February and March.

“That’s what championship teams need to do,” Palmerton head coach Ken Termini said. “We have a series of goals for our program every year, and those are consistent each year.”

Termini enters his seventh season in charge of the Bombers, and has a core of returning players who want to complete some unfinished business from last season - which resulted in an 18-9 overall record, and a 13-5 mark in the Colonial League.

“This group is hungry,” Termini said. “They lost in overtime in the league semifinals, and we did this with a group playing a ton of sophomores.

“They know they have a great opportunity in front of them, and I think that they’re willing to embrace the weight of expectations.”

Palmerton may be the envy of other programs in the league as it welcomes back four-fifths of its starting lineup. Only Kyle Sebelin, who averaged 2.9 points per game a year ago, has graduated.

The Bombers will be led by a pair of returning All-League players in juniors Matt Machalik and Brayden Hosier.

Machalik, a unanimous First Team CL selection and last year’s Times News Player of the Year, averaged 16.74 ppg., while Second Team CL pick Hosier tossed in 13.52 per contest.

They aren’t the only ones back, as seniors Chase Reph (7.52), Kendall Robinson (2.11) and Justin Sebelin, along with juniors Zach Anthony (3.91) and Jacob Grammes (3.11) give Palmerton both depth and experience.

“We have 92% of our scoring and 86% of our minutes back,” Termini said. “We have a group of players that have been playing together literally since the sixth grade.

“They have been building for this moment, and I think they’re ready to embrace the opportunity in front of them.”

Termini will also look to get contributions from the rest of his squad, which includes seniors Dalton Rumfield and Nate Steinmetz, juniors Aiden Leister and Trace Stahler, and sophomore Corey Serfass.

If there is a weakness facing the Bombers, it’s probably a lack of height - especially in the post position. That, however, is commonplace throughout the league.

“I think the most obvious thing when you look at it is we’re not tall,” Termini said. “We’ve got to make sure we’re able to rebound the ball, and we need to make sure that we’re able to operate our offenses in a way where we can create the separation. We need to get shots off.

“So if there’s something we need to overcome, that’s the most obvious thing.”

If things fall into place for the head coach and his players, Palmerton could reach a milestone number.

“It’s season 107 for Palmerton basketball, and we enter the season 21 wins short of 1,400 program wins,” Termini said. “We will be good enough to compete every single night, and we hope to play in both league and district playoffs, and possibly even in states. We have a lot of work to do to accomplish those goals.

“But, if we do, and hopefully with a little bit of luck, maybe we get to have a couple of celebrations in the postseason - not only with championships, but we could hang up our 1,400th career program win.”
