Holiday cheer this weekend at Palmerton H.S.

The sounds of the season will emanate from Palmerton Area High School’s auditorium this week as the school’s drama club puts on its production of “White Christmas,” running Thursday-Saturday nights.

Doors open at 6 p.m. each night, with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased at the door or at https://phsdramaclub.ludus.com/

For drama club director Brent Harris, choosing “White Christmas” keeps up with Palmerton’s goal of choosing a production the audience hasn’t seen from students in the past.

“This has kept us on our toes over the years and always gives our patrons something new each time they buy a ticket,” Harris said. “‘White Christmas’ is a true 1950s musical to its core. It is packed full of big song and dance numbers, which we have never done in the fall.”

Palmerton’s rehearsal time in the fall is one month shorter than it gets for its spring production, meaning condensed schedules on stage and behind the scenes.

“White Christmas” will be the school’s first musical to feature full tap dance routines.

“Our students were excited to learn that,” Harris said. “The fact that we have high school and junior high students who had never tap danced before but were eager to learn it and dance these numbers with smiles on their faces amazes me every day. They have been such a great cast and we hope the audience enjoys seeing them at work as much as we do every day.”

The increased difficulty of the music and choreography make “White Christmas” a standout show, Harris said.

“It is also a much more lighthearted and fun production when compared with ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ last spring, which we loved, but certainly has its heavy moments,” he said. “The charm of ‘White Christmas’ is something that we have definitely felt and have been enjoying throughout rehearsals.”

Audiences can expect the cast’s vocal and dance abilities to be bought to the forefront when the show kicks off Thursday night. Some of the music contains eight-part harmonies, which Harris described as “very challenging.”

“Hearing seven vocal parts besides your own can certainly make it difficult to pick out your own notes and sing them accurately,” he said. “Combine that with increased dance and tap requirements and ‘White Christmas’ can make for a very difficult show to pull off. Our students fought very hard to get to where they are with this production and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”
