DA warns residents about package theft

Package thefts are common around the holidays and Carbon County District Attorney Michael Greek is asking residents to be more vigilant in protecting their deliveries.

Greek said there has been an uptick in reports of package thieves targeting the area.

“Thieves simply drive through residential neighborhoods looking for unattended packages or follow delivery trucks around in order to steal the more lucrative items,” he said. “These thefts tend to happen in waves and once on a roll, they can hit entire neighborhoods.”

The following precautions, Greek said, can be taken to help ensure the protection of packages:

• Arrange for your mail to be delivered to a Post Office Box.

• Track your packages and use delivery alerts in order to retrieve your packages as soon as they are delivered.

• Add delivery instructions to leave it in a specified hidden or secure location.

• Request a signature confirmation upon delivery.

• Install a video doorbell or security camera.

“It is extremely important to always file a police report when your package is stolen.” Greek said. “Reporting these crimes allows law enforcement to be aware of what areas are being affected.”
