Jim Thorpe hires music teacher

Jim Thorpe High School has found a long sought after music, band, chorus and drama teacher.

The district’s board of directors, during a special meeting Tuesday night, hired Dr. Steven Christ to the position, which will pay a salary of $55,564.

Christ comes to Jim Thorpe from Panther Valley, where he spent just over a year as band director at the junior/senior high school.

Several months ago, Jim Thorpe Superintendent Robert Presley said the district would be advertising for the position in the hopes that chorus could be brought back into the high school after a multi-year absence.

“Currently, our high school students don’t have a chorus option because we only have one person for the entire district,” Presley said in October. “We have a lot of K-8 students interested and we’re building that program, but if we want them to continue up through high school, we need to hire another teacher.”

Christ studied music education at Lebanon Valley College and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina.
