Schuylkill man jailed in shooting of two

A Schuylkill County man was jailed on Sunday and charged with attempted homicide in the shooting of a man and woman.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurred shortly after midnight at a residence on Ridge Road in Wayne Township.

Troopers said at 12:56 a.m., they responded to that address for a report of an active domestic incident between father and son. While en route, troopers received information from the county communications center that two people at the scene were shot. Troopers from the Hamburg and Jonestown barracks also responded.

Upon arrival, troopers located the alleged shooter, Aaron Hopkins, 24, of Wayne Township. He was taken into custody without incident. Troopers began to render aid to the two gunshot victims. A firearm utilized during the incident is suspected to be a long rife and was located and secured at the scene.

One victim, a woman age 52, was flown by medical helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, for treatment of a gunshot wound to her arm. A second victim, a man age 52, was flown by medical helicopter to the Reading Hospital for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Hopkins was taken before on-call District Judge Edward Tarantelli, of Frackville, and arraigned on attempted homicide and related charges. He was committed to the county prison, unable to post bail.
