Marian to compete in academic scrimmages

Marian Catholic High School will compete in the WVIA Scholastic Scrimmage, an academic competition attended by students from across northern Pennsylvania.

It consists of two rounds in which a team is asked a question and the correct answer gives them a bonus question for extra points. An incorrect answer offers the opposing team a chance to steal.

The rounds are separated by a lighting round in which each team attempts to answer the most questions possible on a specific topic.

The competition offers prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 to the top three teams.

Marian’s team includes captains Addison Pan and Angela Pan; members Alyssa Kuba and Alexander Cornmessor, and alternates Derrick Dang and Julius Currie. The adviser is Janet Whalen.

The WVIA Scholastic Scrimmage will be aired on the WVIA channel.

Marian is also included in the Schuylkill League academic competition.

The team for the first competition included Addison Pan, Angela Pan, Tevin Walsh, Emily Eroh, Alyssa Kuba, Ethan Risteter, Mason Matrazzo, Eliza Bauder and adviser Janet Whalen.

For the next competition, Marian has new members including Joey Walko, Trinity Hoover, Ryan Berube, Julius Currie, Derrick Dang and Mia Rinaldi.

The competition has multiple rounds consisting of a toss-up round with 10 questions and each team has 15 seconds to buzz in, and a fanfare round with six questions. Both types of rounds are repeated twice.

The total score is recorded. They are added together from all competitions with the final total determining the rankings.
