CCTI Student Council works to help community

Jacquelyn Cole, an English teacher and Student Council adviser, told the CCTI Joint Operating Committee about the different ways the Student Council is learning to help people.

Used sneakers

“Student council has been collecting used sneakers,” Cole said. “Rather than going directly to the landfill, these sneakers are being donated to a company that will look at the soles; and, if they could give them a second home, they will. If not, they will recycle them, keeping them out of the landfills.”

Thanksgiving food drive

Student Council, SADD and Aevidum collected canned goods for their annual CCTI Thanksgiving food drive, which ended Nov. 18. The meals go to lucky CCTI students to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day.

The extra food will be donated to a local food pantry.

“In the technical areas, it’s a big competition between them all, and they like to see who could bring the most,” Cole said. “We would like to thank all students and staff for their donations.”

Pull tabs

The Student Council will conduct their annual Pull Tab collection in the spring, and a big competition between the various technical departments. Pull tabs, which are taken from canned goods with tabs, are donated to the Ronald McDonald House. This helps defer the medical costs for families who need their services.

Spirit week

“Student Council hosted our annual Spirit Week, which was held at the end of October,” Cole said. “The themes were Disney Day, Fashion Disaster, Hawaiian Day, Dress Your Best, and Halloween Dress Up Day,” Cole said. “Our students really enjoy these theme days, and it’s amazing to see the amount of students that participate in them.”

Fall festival

Cole told the committee that she was in charge of vendor registration for the First Fall Festival.

“We had over 30 vendors,” she said. “We had everything from handmade jewelry to painted wooden signs. Some of our student organizations had tables as well. There were over 50 baskets and items for the basket raffle that were donated by the vendors, faculty and local businesses.”

Cole thanked everyone who helped: advisers, teachers, support staff, maintenance workers and administration.
