Carbon County officials say they don’t have any plans to sell the train station in Jim Thorpe, but have approved an agreement that would give an area railroad the first chance to purchase it if it ever goes up for sale.
On Thursday, the board of commissioners approved an agreement with Reading Blue Mountain and Northern stating that if the county decides to sell the station, which currently houses Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau, as well as Reading and Northern office space, the county “shall afford the railroad the first opportunity to make an offer to purchase the railroad station.”
If the county declines the offer and receives offers from other entities, the railroad would then have the opportunity to match the other offer before it would be sold, the agreement states.
When asked if this meant the county has plans to sell the station, the board unanimously said that this action does not mean there are any plans to sell the station.
“It will not be sold as long as I am here,” Commissioner Rocky Ahner said.
“It’s just giving them an option should we consider it in the future,” Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said. “But this board has no intent or thought on that. That’s a treasure.”
