Councilwoman warns about dilapidated property

A Nesquehoning councilwoman again aired her concerns over a dilapidated property that is in imminent danger of collapsing.

On Wednesday, councilwoman Abbie Guardiani discussed the condition of 217 W. Catawissa St., which has developed a hole in the roof and the front porch is collapsing.

“It is completely dangerous,” she said, noting that there is a hearing yesterday regarding the property, but she was expecting the homeowner, who lives in Maine, to not show.

Guardiani said that the homeowner owns two dilapidated homes, the one in Nesquehoning and one in Coaldale; as well as one that is maintained by family members in Hometown.

The main problem now is the safety of the next-door neighbor, who lives on the adjoining house.

Guardiani said that the borough hired an inspection official to see if the remaining half double had a foundation or if it would need to be shored up if the other half was demolished. Unfortunately, it was built with only a wooden wall and would need a foundation.

Council also received an estimate to take down the dilapidated home, as well as shore up the other side. That estimate came in at $39,000, which will be included in information at the hearing on the property.

Guardiani said that the real concern now is the person living in the other half because of the quickly deteriorating condition of the structure.

“We don’t know how to guarantee their safety,” she said.
