Fire damages 3 homes in Tamaqua

No one was injured when flames tore through a home at 223 Orwigsburg St. and damaged two adjoining properties in Tamaqua Monday morning.

No one was home when the fire broke out around 10:13 a.m., according to Tamaqua Fire Chief James Connely.

Crews were originally dispatched to 218 Orwigsburg St.

Despite the incorrect address, Connely said responders had no problem finding it, since flames were pouring through the second floor windows.

He called for a second alarm.

“We did call a second alarm on it to bring in the Coaldale Fire Department and Panther Valley RIT. It is a Monday and in the daytime, sometimes the manpower is short. We wanted to play it safe by calling in additional manpower through the second alarm,” he said.

Connely said 223 Orwigsburg St. - where the fire began - suffered the most damage. Both the tenants and the property owner are insured, he said.

Adjoining homes at 221 and 225 Orwigsburg St. also suffered damages. Both homes are insured.

He said no one was living at 225 Orwigsburg St.

“We’re still trying to determine the cause right now,” he said.

Monday’s temperatures hovered just above the 40 degree mark. As firefighters were wrapping up the blaze, Alfonso Picone from La Dolce Casa in Tamaqua delivered several boxes of pizza.

The fire happened about two weeks after an Oct. 29 blaze impacted multiple buildings on the 100 block of West Broad Street in Tamaqua. The cause of that fire is undetermined, Connely said.
