Lansford frustrated with dilapidated sites

A question was raised about several dilapidated garages and buildings, as well as junked cars and debris on several properties in the Borough of Lansford during the borough council meeting.

The properties in question are all owned by BEC Lehigh Real Estate LLC, whose address shows as 200 Dryden Road, Dresher, according to the public Carbon County GIS tax map.

Borough resident Robert Hertzog raised the issue.

“A couple weeks ago, we were coming home from shopping and my wife said, ‘Let’s take a ride by my Mom’s house.’ So we did, and the garage across from my mother-in-law’s house, the roof is completely collapsed in. It’s bad,” Hertzog said.

He continued, “And as you continue down West Snyder Avenue toward the Zoo, right before you get to The Zoo, there is a junkyard, and I mean it, it’s a junkyard. There are six broken down cars; wheels off, hoods up, car parts laying all over. I mean, it’s bad.”

Council President Bruce Markovich said, “They own garages up on East Abbott Street that are all collapsed.”

Markovich said the borough directed the owners to take down the garages.

“We set up traffic control for them. They told us they were going up on a set date with a loader. We were going to close the streets and everything so they could have easy access to it. And then when the day came, they never showed up.”

Council Vice President William Chuma added that properties on Water Street are also an issue. “We’ve been after them for two years to tear those garages down. And there’s about six garages on the 400 block of East Avenue Street. The roofs are caved in, and everything. They were going to clean it up; they got a new CEO, and guess what? It wasn’t done.”

BEC did not answer a request for comment.
