Panther Valley awards 3 roofing contracts

The Panther Valley School District will undertake several roofing projects.

During a recent school board meeting, directors awarded bids for three roofs to Spotts Brothers, Inc. of Schuylkill Haven.

Spotts submitted the lowest bids for a weight room roof at $78,978; a track and field roof at $13,265, and loading dock roof for $6,850.

Directors also voted to purchase noise reducing ceiling tiles for the elementary school cafeteria from Kanopi by Armstrong at a cost of $7,523.36. The tiles are expected to result in a 20% noise reduction.

“Any teacher can tell you how loud it is down there,” Superintendent David McAndrew Jr. said.

He said the tiles will be purchased with cafeteria funds. All tiles will be replaced and there will be some kept in reserve.

In a related action, directors approved the sale of 20 cafeteria tables to the Jim Thorpe Area School District at a price of $250 each. The tables are not needed because new ones were recently put in place.

The board was split on a vote to advertise for a high school assistant principal. Directors Renee DeMelfi, Joseph Faenza and Keith Krapf were against the move. Director Steve Foster was absent.

DeMelfi explained her opposition saying, “It is not that we don’t need it but there are other things we need as a priority.”

The board will hold its reorganization meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m. The January meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan 18.
