2 killed in dump truck rollover on I-78

Two people were killed when a dump truck crashed on Interstate 78 in Lehigh County on Monday, according to state police at Fogelsville.

The crash happened at approximately 9:52 a.m. at mile marker 48 in Upper Macgungie Township, closing the highway in the eastbound direction.

State police said a Mack dump truck, which was hauling a skid steer on a trailer, was traveling in the right lane of I-78 eastbound.

The dump truck bed struck the Adams Road overpass, causing both the dump bed and trailer to detach from the body of the dump truck. After striking the overpass, the dump truck rolled over and came to rest in the eastbound lane.

Two people in the dump truck were pronounced dead by the Lehigh County coroner.

The driver was Donald T. Gercie, 63, of Alpha, New Jersey. The passenger was Joel A. Fantauzzi Ortiz, 40, of Bethlehem.

The right lane of I-78 westbound remained open during this investigation. Both westbound lanes were reopened at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Assisting at the scene were: Cetronia Ambulance, Upper Macungie Township Fire Department, Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Unit, Upper Macungie Township Police Department, Lehigh County Coroner, Goodwill Fire Company and V & M Towing.
