What a time to be a Philly sports fan

Their baseball team is vying for a world title, while their football squad at this writing remains unblemished on the gridiron.

The buzz generated by the championship aspirations of the Phillies and Eagles has sent its fan base into a euphoric state.

After practically being left for dead a mere month ago, the Phillies have shocked the world with their mad dash into the World Series.

They’ve done it with a recipe of a mash-em bash-em offense, solid pitching and heady defense that has led them to their match-up with the Houston Astros in the Fall Classic.

Any voters who don’t believe manager Rob (don’t call him Robbie) Thomson isn’t a worthy Manager of the Year candidate ought to have their credentials checked into.

Since replacing former manager Joe Girardi, the Phils have been a well-disciplined team that has displayed the hunger of a lion, and the heart of a champion.

Not exactly an easy thing for a die-hard New York Mets fan such as myself to admit when his team led its division for all but a few days, only to fizzle down the stretch and collapse in the postseason.

Win or lose, the Phillies have proved that it’s a long season, and the regular season grind is all about staying in the hunt just enough to put yourself in the race for contention.

Football fans in the city have been equally, if not even more, giddy by the fact their Philadelphia Eagles have remained the only undefeated team in the National Football League.

A team that has been searching for an identity in recent years has blossomed into an offensive juggernaut capable of easily dropping 30 points a night on their overmatched opposition.

Chances are a show of hands from all those who thought the Birds would be unbeaten this deep into the regular season would most assuredly have been leaner than someone sporting an eight-pack.

The fact that there is valid talk of the team’s advancement to the Super Bowl, albeit a bit too early to tell, speaks to how dominant the Eagles have been.

Though not quite yet through the midway point of the season, there’s still plenty of work for the Eagles to do before anyone can truly proclaim them as the team to beat.

Whether their proven/expected/unexpected successes will result in a championship banner and subsequent parade in Philly in the days/weeks/months to come remains to be determined.

What isn’t up for debate is that the city’s passion and excitement for its professional sports teams is arguably at an equally or quite possibly all-time high.

Relish in the moment, as instances where fans have this much to be excited about in the same city at the same time in so many arenas are few and far between.

If nothing else, take these as words of sage advice from a long-suffering Mets, 76ers and Chicago Bears fan who knows all too well what a championship drought feels like.

The last time the Sixers won an NBA championship was all the way back in 1983, when the writer of this week’s column was but only 6 years old, too young to fully grasp the magnitude of the moment.

As for the Mets and Bears, one has to travel back to the year 1986, when both teams last won a world championship in their respective sports.

Guess I’ll just have to remain patient as I wait for that magical moment to arrive.

On second thought, are there still any seats left to hop on the Philly bandwagon?
