Palmerton works on 2023 budget

Palmerton residents should soon have a clearer picture whether they need to set aside extra money next year for their municipal taxes.

Borough Manager Donna McGarry said at Thursday’s borough council meeting that preliminary work has been done on the 2023 budget.

McGarry said she’s met with the police department, and plans to meet with the fire department and public works department.

She said she plans to present next year’s budget when council meets at 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

McGarry said council plans to adopt the budget when it meets at 7 p.m. Dec. 15.

This year, residents saw a 1-mill increase in their municipal tax rates.

That raised the millage rate from 12.77 to 13.77 mills, which resulted in about a $2 per month increase for a smaller home in the borough, and about a $7 per month increase for a larger or newer home in the borough.

McGarry said a half mill would go into the debt fund to finance the firetruck loan, while a half mill would go into the general fund with the intention of starting annual transfers into a capital projects fund for future equipment purchases.

There was no increase in the sewer, water or trash rates.
