No criminal negligence found in fatal gas explosion

Almost two years after a gas line explosion killed a woman in a car, the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office found no evidence of criminal negligence, the office said in a statement.

The woman, 33-year-old Ana R. Abreau, died early Christmas morning in 2020 when she was a passenger in a car traveling on Lower Swiftwater Road in Pocono Township.

The car, with a driver and three passengers, including Abreau and a 2-month-old child, was traveling west toward Route 611 when a UGI gas main beneath the road erupted, causing the to flip on its roof.

Abreau’s husband, the baby and an extended family member survived the 1:30 a.m. crash.

The explosion left a huge hole in the road, exposing the gas main and a fracture in the pipe. No other vehicles were involved.
