Fire sweeps through Tamaqua buildings

Firefighters from across the region responded to an intense fire that struck Tamaqua’s downtown just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

No one was injured in the blaze, which impacted multiple buildings on the 100 block of West Broad Street.

According to Tamaqua Fire Chief James Connely, the fire started on the third floor of the Mila Buffet Chinese restaurant, 123 W. Broad St.

Connely was one of the first to arrive on the scene.

“It was through the roof,” he said. “There was a good header of black smoke.”

Connely called for a second and then a third alarm because the fire was in the borough’s commercial district and he knew he’d need all the manpower possible.

The fire spread east to 117 - 119 W. Broad St. where flames poured from the third floor windows and roof. Unlike the Chinese restaurant, the property has apartments on upper floors. It once housed Sean’s Pet Supplies but its storefront is vacant.

Crews used a total of four ladder trucks to fight the fire from West Broad Street. Additional personnel attacked from the rear of the buildings on West Rowe Street.

Connely said the properties share a common open area on the top floors, which allowed the fire to travel.

The restaurant and 117 - 119 W. Broad St. are likely a loss.

Also impacted were the D n A Bike Shop, 113 - 115 W. Broad St., Upper Echelon Barbershop, 111 W. Broad St., and Bowe and Odorizzi Law, 109 W. Broad St., all of which suffered some degree of smoke and water damage; and Perla Enterprises Building, formerly the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., which suffered smoke damage.

Connely said an investigation will begin Sunday at 8 a.m.

Responding to the scene in addition to the Tamaqua fire Department were companies from Summit Hill, Lansford, Schuylkill Haven, McAdoo, Mahanoy City, Nesquehoning, Pottsville and Coaldale, along with ambulances from Ryan Township, Lehighton and Mahoning Valley. The Tamaqua Police were also one of the first to respond.

Personnel remained on the scene until after 9 p.m.

The American Red Cross is assisting the victims. Local businesses, including Dunkin’ Donuts and La Dolce Casa, provided responders with food and beverages.

Saturday was Trick or Treat Night in the borough.
