Schuylkill court news - sentencing

Schuylkill County judges have meted out punishments to two Tamaqua men for substance abuse crimes.

Joel Thomas Vermillion, 32, of Tamaqua, was charged by Walker Township Police Officer Douglas L. Springer Jr. with manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance; two counts of intent to possess a controlled substance; possession of a small amount of marijuana personal use; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; driving while his operating privileges while his license was suspended or revoked, and operating a vehicle without the required financial responsibility on May 18, 2021.

Vermillion pleaded guilty to the charge of manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to deliver, and Judge Christopher Hobbs sentenced him to serve 27 months to five years in state prison.

On the charge of possession of a controlled substance, Hobbs sentenced Vermillion to serve 12-24 months in state prison; on the marijuana charge, 15 to 30 days in state prison; on the paraphernalia charge, six to 12 months n state prison; on the charge of driving while his lies was suspended or revoked, 30 days to six months in state prison and to pay a $1,000 fine.

All of the prison time is to be served concurrently with the first sentencing.

On the charge of driving without insurance, Hobbs ordered Vermillion to pay a $300 fine and a total of $77 in fees; submit a DNA sample and pay the $250 fee.

Kevin Dillon, 48, of Tamaqua, was charged by borough Police Officer Douglas L. Springer Jr. with unauthorized use of a motor/other vehicles; driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, first offense; driving with a blood alcohol content of .02 or greater while his license was suspended; accidental damage to an unattended vehicle or property; and failing to notify police of accidental damage to a vehicle on Jan. 1, 2022.

Dillon pleaded guilty to the charge of driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol.

Judge Charles M. Miller sentenced him to six months on probation.

He also ordered Dillion to pay the costs of prosecution, pay a $1,000 fine, and $250 in fees. Dillon also must pay a $50 a month supervision fee.

Miller ordered Dillon to complete Alcohol Highway Safety School, complete a one to three month outpatient substance abuse treatment program, surrender his license for 12 months, and to complete 20 hours of community service.

Miller also sentenced him to serve 18 months on probation on the unauthorized use charge, and pay a $1,000 fine on the charge of driving while his operating privileges were suspended.

Dillon also admitted to driving under the influence while his license was suspended, but Miller ordered no further penalty.

The other two charges, those of causing accidental damage and failing to notify police, were dropped.
