The Pennsylvania State Police, Troop N, would like to remind Community members to be aware that thefts are on the rise, and how to protect yourself. As we go out and shop for the upcoming holiday season, it is important to remember to lock your vehicle doors and keep valuables out of sight and secured in the trunk or cargo area. Also, while your vehicle is parked at your home, always keep your doors locked to prevent thefts. This goes the same for your homes, always keep all exterior doors locked, to include sheds and storage areas.
Currently in our area we are also experiencing a high number of scams occurring.
The most common scam is the “loved one” scam. Scammers will contact you by phone and explain that your loved one (typically grandchild), is in trouble and currently in jail, possibly even citing specific names. The scammers will often say “Don’t talk to anyone about this, I’m sure it would be embarrassing to your family”. They will then explain that in exchange for cash, their loved one will be released from jail. The scammers will then ask for an address where they can pick up the money. At this point, they will send a courier to pick up the cash. Do not feel pressured to give money - contact a family member if you are concerned.
Trust your instinct, if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Don’t be so quick to give away your hard-earned money. If you or anyone you know is a victim of a scam, contact law enforcement to have it investigated.
