Carbon County is gearing up for the election and has announced several upcoming dates for voters.
On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner announced that from today through Nov. 8, there will be two reserved spots in the 44 Susquehanna St., lot for voters who want to turn in mail-in ballots in person or have other election bureau related business. Those spots are located as soon as you come in the lot.
On Nov. 1, the election bureau will be open until 5 p.m. by state law.
The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 5 for poll workers who need to pick up election equipment. The 44 lot will be used by Elections during those hours and will be closed to the public.
On Election Day, the bureau will be open all day and the 44 lot will be shut down to the public beginning at 4:30 p.m. Only election personnel, as well as poll workers returning equipment, scanned ballots and other election related material will be allowed in the lot after hours.
As a reminder, Ahner also addressed early in-person voting in Carbon County.
He noted that a person cannot just walk into the election bureau in Jim Thorpe and receive a ballot to vote. They must fill out an application.
Lisa Dart, director of election, said in a statement that the application must be verified and could take up to an hour to process.
So if a person wants to vote early in-person, they would need to block off at least an hour of their time to do so. This would need to be completed at the election bureau.
Monday is the deadline to register to vote in Pennsylvania. Mail in and absentee ballots must be requested by Nov 1 by 5 p.m. and returned to the election office by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
