Men jailed in Lansford shooting

A Philadelphia man and his son, from Lansford, have been charged in a shooting late Monday night in Lansford.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Sgt. Shawn Nunemacher in the case against Reinardo Mendez:

At 11:19 p.m. Monday, Nunemacher was called to handle a shooting that had occurred at 446 East Bertsch St. in the first floor apartment.

Police found a man with a gunshot wound to his arm. He was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest Hospital.

Blood was on the sidewalk in front of the residence.

A woman who lives at the residence told police that Reinardo’s son, Justin Mendez, was at the residence and was upset about the victim hugging her.

Justin Mendez left the residence and returned a short while later with a man the woman didn’t know, but she said he had shot the victim.

Police found blood all over the floor and a spent bullet in a closet door.

A woman who is the girlfriend of the man who was shot told police she was inside the residence when the incident happened and said that the other man was at the residence initially, but left.

She said Justin Mendez returned with his father Reinardo Mendez and that they both attacked the victim and began assaulting him.

She said the man identified as Reinardo Mendez pulled out a silver gun and shot the victim. Both men fled the scene.

Neighboring witnesses said the man was wearing a white hoodie and black cap, and witnesses inside the residence described him and said Justin Mendez lives in the 500 block of East Bertsch Street.

Mendez was located on Patterson Street and taken into custody.

Justin Mendez, 22, refused to speak with officers and immediately requested his attorney. Police said he has no record.

A search warrant was obtained for a gunshot residue kit and clothing/shoes from Reinardo Mendez.

Reinardo Mendez said he would have residue on his hands because he was shooting a firearm on the range.

When police questioned him about not being allowed to possess a gun, he said he was not at the range.

The victim was in Cedar Crest having surgery as of press time.

Reinardo Mendez faces charges of burglary, aggravated assault, criminal trespass, recklessly endangering another person, and person not to possess firearm.

His bail has been denied, and he is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Oct. 26 before District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek of Lansford.
