Fire Prevention Week events

This year marks the 100th anniversary of fire prevention week.

Area fire companies are conducting fire prevention activities in schools and having open houses:

• Germansville Fire Company and Heidelberg Union Church will be hosting a trunk or treat and fire department open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct 29 at the fire company, 6011 Memorial Road, Germansville.

• Hometown Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, 45 Mahanoy Ave., Tamaqua, will have a fire prevention open house from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Meet the first responders, activities and give-aways.

• The Nesquehoning, Lansford, Summit Hill and Coaldale fire departments will be presenting four programs Friday at the Panther Valley Elementary Center in Nesquehoning.

• Palmerton Fire Company will have programs Wednesday at S.S. Palmer elementary school and Thursday at Parkside elementary school. Volunteers will be visiting day cares in the upcoming two weeks including Little Bomber Daycare, Watch Me Grow and Little Bombers Daycare.

Activities will include a fire safety trailer and planning escapes from the home.

• The Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 will hold an open house on 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the station, located at 1387 Route 903 in Penn Forest Township, with displays of fire equipment and live demonstrations of firefighting techniques, tours and refreshments.

• Schuylkill Township supervisors and Tuscarora and Mary-D fire departments will host and open house at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Tuscarora Fire Company, 301 Mulberry St, Tuscarora. The event will include live demonstrations, food, refreshments, give-aways and door prizes.

• West End Fire and Rescue, Mahanoy City, will host an open house from 6 to 9 p.m. at the fire company, 700 West Mahanoy Ave.

• West Penn Fire Company will conduct a fire prevention program on Oct 14 at the West Penn elementary school. The department conducted a drawing contest for the fifth grade students. The winner will get a fire truck ride to school.

The department will also have an open house from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the fire company, 21 Municipal Road, New Ringgold.
