I-80 reopens after body recovered in creek

A body was discovered in a Stroud Township creek Friday morning, prompting a closure of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80.

The Stroud Area Regional Police Department was dispatched at 9:15 a.m. when a fisherman discovered what he believed to be a dead body in the Pocono Creek in the area of Tanite Road in Stroud Township.

Officers responded and did locate a body in the creek.

The body was recovered from the water at about 12:15 p.m. with the assistance of fire personnel and turned over to the coroner’s office.

The deceased was identified as 26-year-old Anthony Nicholas Counterman of Greenville, North Carolina, originally from Stroudsburg.

The cause and manner of death is undetermined and will be pending autopsy results.

The Pennsylvania State Police, Monroe County Coroners Officer, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Suburban EMS and Stroud, Bushkill and Shawnee fire departments assisted at the scene.
