Packer Twp. seeks Weatherly board’s help

Packer Township wants help in its effort to exact payments from the Hazleton City Authority.

The authority is the provider of water and sewer services for Hazleton and has property in Packer Township, which is in the Weatherly Area School District.

Packer supervisor Robert Selert went before the Weatherly school board asking for its help in getting the city authority to make payments to the township and school district because the authority doesn’t pay taxes.

Selert told school board members how the Bethlehem Water Authority gives money each year to Penn Forest and Franklin townships, Carbon County and Jim Thorpe School District.

Selert said Lausanne and Lehigh townships also want the Hazleton City Authority to make payments. He said the city authority is making a lot of money because of logging operations.

Selert told the Weatherly board members it wouldn’t cost the district anything at this time.

Weatherly school board president April Walters told Selert he would be invited to speak at an executive session.

In other business, the board approved the Weatherly PTA’s request for monthly meetings the second Tuesday of each month through the school year at a school facility.

It also approved the request by parents of this year’s senior class to use the middle school gymnasium Nov. 19 for a senior class basketball fundraiser.

The board approved Sheral Anderson-Bamford as a substitute nurse and Gabriella Hernandez as a part-time paraprofessional
