No action taken on W. Penn zoning ordinance

No action has been taken on recommended modifications to West Penn Township’s zoning ordinance.

It was announced at Monday’s board of supervisors meeting that they reviewed comments from Urban Research & Development Corporation.

The board next plans to discuss its zoning ordinance when it meets at 10 a.m. Oct. 17.

The board then plans to have another public hearing.

Last month, resident Brian McQuillen asked supervisors if there were updates on the ordinance.

Township solicitor Paul J. Datte was not present at that meeting, so McQuillen asked what the next step is.

Board Chairman Tony Prudenti at that meeting read an email from Datte with regard to the zoning ordinance.

“If the ordinance ‘is changed substantially’ or ‘is revised to include land previously not affected by it,’ then another public hearing is required,” Datte said in the email.

“The revised ordinance would not need to go back to either the township or county planning commissions.”

The original public hearing on proposed changes to the township’s zoning ordinance was Sept. 6.

Prudenti said at that time he’d like to hold a second hearing in any event.

Residents at the Sept. 6 meeting questioned designated areas, including one zoned highway commercial that allows for a grain mill.

“But we can confirm once we know exactly how the ordinance will be revised,” Datte said in the email. “If another public hearing is scheduled, then notice will need to be advertised once a week for two successive weeks before the hearing.”

As a result, Datte said last month the board may be looking at November, or possibly a special meeting.
