Lehighton police chat with citizens

There was plenty of civility and decorum - even the occasional laughter - to go around Wednesday morning at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Lehighton.

Lehighton Borough Police Department organized a gathering as part of National Coffee with a Cop Day.

Flanked by about a handful of his friends, William Colaviti of Lehighton said the group usually meets at Dunkin’ about three to four times a week.

“We come here to drink our coffee and talk,” Colaviti said. “It’s good to get to know who’s on the police force.”

The day had a bit more significance for Penn Forest Township resident Joe Steber, who celebrated his 78th birthday.

Joined by his brother, Mark Steber of Lehighton, Joe Steber said he believes National Coffee with a Cop Day is a good program.

“I wish more kids would get involved,” Steber said. “The parents have to get more involved.”

Borough police Chief Joe Sparich said the event is to encourage communication and positive interaction between law enforcement and the public.

“I thought it went well,” Sparich said. “We got to meet several members of the community.”

Sparich said that in addition to his department, Franklin Township police officer Chris Lekka, along with state police from the Lehighton barracks, were on hand.

“We appreciate everybody coming out,” he said. “We plan to do more events throughout the year to give the public a chance to talk with us, share their concerns, opinions.”

Sparich also thanked Dunkin’ Donuts for allowing them to hold the event.

“The event was successful,” he said. “It was nice to get that interaction.”
