Lehighton revisits curfew at park

Lehighton hasn’t decided yet if it will change the times when Community Grove is open.

Borough council on Monday revisited a potential curfew ordinance, though it did not take any action.

The park’s hours are now 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Councilman Donnie Rehrig said that back in his youth, he was sure to go home once the siren sounded.

Rehrig said that a curfew may be something that would help the borough’s police officers.

Borough solicitor Jim Nanovic said he was pretty sure that curfew ordinances were unconstitutional.

“We have separate curfews for our parks,” Nanovic said. “You can enforce that.”

In August, Mayor Clark Ritter suggested to council about setting an earlier curfew.

Ritter said at that time it’s his opinion that younger children ages 6-8 should be at home in bed by 8 p.m.

Councilman Ryan Saunders agreed that people shouldn’t be at the Community Grove beyond a certain time.
