Carbon plans a busy week to honor veterans
Carbon County is gearing up for a busy week leading up to Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
The veterans affairs office has announced several events taking place the week of Nov. 6 that will honor the men and women who have served.
Kicking off the week is the annual Carbon County Veterans Day Parade, held this year in Palmerton. It will begin at 2 p.m.
At 10 a.m. on Nov. 7, the county will kick off #OperationGreenLight with a Veterans Day service in Josiah White Park.
Palmerton police Chief and U.S. Army Veteran Timothy Kromer will be the keynote speaker for the event. All are invited.
From 5-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, veterans are welcome to a dinner and beach campfire at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Bring your camp chair.
An RSVP to this event is required by Nov. 1.
A ruck march Walk with A Veteran is planned for 7 a.m. on Nov. 9 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.
Veterans will participate in a 2.5-mile downhill march from the lake to Flagstaff Road. Transportation back to the lake will then be available.
Refreshments will be provided.
Together With Veterans NEPA, partnering with St. Luke’s University Health Network, will celebrate the grand opening of Carbon County’s news Veterans Hub of Northeastern PA at St. Luke’s Lehighton campus at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10.
All are welcome to see the new hub, located in the main lobby entrance at 211 N. 12th St.
Later that evening, Together With Veterans will welcome veterans and a guest to Penn’s Peak for a Veterans Day dinner. The event takes place from 5-8 p.m. and seating is limited so reservations are required.
For more information or to RSVP to any or all of these events, veterans can call the office at 570-325-3986 or email CLeClair@carboncounty.net.
In addition to these events, Carbon County, which became the first Operation Green Light for Veterans County in the country in July, will ask residents and businesses to change one light bulb in their home to a green light bulb in the hopes of starting a conversation and raising awareness and showing support for veterans.
The national initiative expands on Operation Green Light by New York State Association of Counties and NYS County Veteran Service Officers Association in the hopes of raising awareness about challenges veterans face and resources that are available to them through county Veterans Affairs offices.
