Polk Township environmental day event is Sunday

Local organizations, pumpkins, apples, a petting zoo, apple cider press and much more will be part of Polk Township’s Environmental Education Day on Sunday.

“We are bringing the community out to enjoy fall festivities and local organizations will teach them about the environment and nature,” said Robert Butler, chairman of the Polk Township Parks and Recreation Commission. “It will be a fun event for all ages.”

The free event will be held rain or shine from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Polk Township Walking Park, 121 Polk Township Rd., Kresgeville.

This will be an opportunity to learn about the township’s parks, as well as future plans for the walking park, Butler said.

The park will be lined with 14 organizations from the West End, including Monroe County Conservation District, Monroe County Garden Club, Trout Unlimited, Monroe County 4-H, Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Western Pocono Community Library.

“The library will set up a temporary story book walk,” Butler said.

Pages from a children’s book will be on posts and everyone walks from one to the next to read the story.

Local farms will be there to sell pumpkins, mums, bird feed and chicken waterers.

Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center will have an hour-long presentation at 2 p.m.

“This will feature nine of their ambassador animals and a lot of information about the wildlife in our area,” said Nancy Wright, vice president of the Polk Township Parks and Recreation Commission.

Attendees will be able to learn about the life cycles of monarch butterflies, brook trout and pumpkins.

There will be a pumpkin patch, where each child will receive a free pumpkin while supplies last, Wright said.

Smale’s Farm Store is donating some of the pumpkins, and the commission purchased the rest.

“There will also be an apple picking area, where kids can pretend to pick apples,” Wright said.

The commission is borrowing an apple cider press. Heckman Orchards, Snyder Orchards and ShopRite of Brodheadsville are donating apples that will be turned into apple cider as the crowd watches and can have a free taste.

There will be face painting, nature stamping - where apples, gourds and corn cobs are dipped into paint - and some games.

DJ Jammin Joe Skabla will be at the event playing country music, Wright said.

The Polk Township Volunteer Fire Department will direct traffic and assist with parking in the field across the street from the park.

The fire company’s ladies auxiliary will sell hot dogs, chips and drinks at the event.

“I’d like to see this become an annual event,” Wright said.
