Shower of Roses to be held Oct. 2 in Nesquehoning

It will be 90 years that roses fell from the heavens in New Columbus as part of the annual Shower of Roses celebration.

The event, held at the Shrine of St. Therese of Lisieux, 1 E. Garibaldi Ave., Nesquehoning, on Oct. 2, will honor the feast day of St. Therese.

It starts at 11 a.m. with a spaghetti dinner in Madonna Hall, as well as a food sale.

Participants will gather inside the shrine at 1:30 p.m. for the recitation of the Rosary; followed by Mass and the crowning of the Rose Queen at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robert George, pastor of St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley and rector of the shrine, will officiate.

A procession of the rose queen and her court will follow the Mass.

At 4:15 p.m., there will be the Novena and benediction, followed by the dropping of the roses by helicopter, weather permitting.

Ahead of the event, organizers welcome residents to attend the St. Therese Novena on Sept. 29 and 30 at 6 p.m. and on Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m. at the shrine.

For more information, visit www.shrneofsainttherese.com or call the parish office at 570-645-2664.

Organizers note that buses are welcome to the event but ask that groups call ahead to plan.
