Tamaqua lifts water boil advisory
A water boil advisory issued for Tamaqua about a week ago was lifted Tuesday afternoon.
The advisory was the result of a major water main break beneath Route 309 in the north end of the borough.
“We are back to normal,” borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt told council during its Tuesday meeting.
The amount of water lost from the leak totaled about 1 million gallons per day.
Borough water and street department workers completed repairs Friday, Steigerwalt said.
“Once the repair was made and the line was charged, we had to wait until we had two consecutive days of good water tests” to lift the advisory, he said.
Affected customers were alerted Tuesday afternoon.
Both Steigerwalt and councilman Ron Bowman commended the crews, who spent days detecting and repairing the leak.
“When you have to jackhammer four feet of concrete around a 30-inch steel pipe, you might get a couple of inches of concrete off. And then you have to cut all the wire mesh that’s in the concrete. Then you jackhammer more,” Bowman said of the work. “They put a lot of time into it so we could have water.”
The borough attributed the leak to general wear and tear.
In an unrelated matter, Bowman praised the work of two South Ward Fire Company volunteers who tended to a fall victim on Monday.
“In my eyes they deserve as much credit as you could possibly give any volunteer there is,” Bowman said of Mark Bower and George Haldeman.
Bowman said the victim could have “possibly bled to death” if it weren’t for the men’s assistance.
“I was amazed they had everything under control before the ambulance and EMT even got there,” he said. “It was unbelievable to witness. I need to acknowledge these two gentlemen tonight and I believe all people in our community should understand that this is the reason we need our volunteers and must appreciate them.”
