Northwestern’s boys soccer team clinched a district playoff berth with its 10th-consecutive win on Saturday.

The Palmerton girls also remained undefeated with a victory over Bangor.

BOYS SOCCER

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Northwestern already clinched a district playoff berth after posting a 2-1 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Josh Zellner had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who remained undefeated at 10-0 overall, and 7-0 in the league.

Northwestern’s Jake Van Lierop added a goal, while Logan Mesic had an assist.

Tigers’ keeper Damian Krapf finished with four saves.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 5-4 overall, and 4-1 in the CL.

No. Lehigh-Lehighton

Two first-half goals lifted Lehighton to a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Northern Lehigh.

Mason Marchessault and Jacob Hall both scored for the Indians, while Matt Sofranko assisted on one of the tallies.

Cameron Fisher (three saves) and Bryce Miller (10 saves) split time in goal for Lehighton. Bulldogs keeper Ethan Kunkle finished the contest with 26 saves.

Lehighton improved to 7-3, while Northern Lehigh fell to 1-5-1.

Bangor-Palmerton

A first-half goal by Bangor stood up as the Slaters registered a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Kaden Dowd headed a send-in off of a corner from Markus Kiernan to account for the game’s only goal.

Blue Bomber keeper Trey Sterling finished with 10 saves, while the Slaters’ Christian Fekete made four stops to post the shutout.

Palmerton dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the league, while Bangor moved to 4-4 overall, and 2-3 in the CL.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. Lehigh-Tamaqua

Northern Lehigh gained a 2-0 non-league win over Tamaqua.

Katelynn Barthold scored a goal right before half for the Bulldogs, while Mikayla Gordon tallied off a header with under five minutes to play to seal the win.

Blue Raiders’ keeper Cecilia Ulicny made 13 saves, while Nolehi goalie Dekotah Barthold finished with seven stops in earning the shutout.

Northern Lehigh improved to 6-3, while Tamaqua slipped to 4-4.

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

In a battle of Colonial League front-runners, Northwestern and Southern Lehigh played to a 0-0 tie.

Tigers’ keeper Naomi Glassberg finished with two saves, while Spartan goalie Ava Foran turned aside 10 shots.

Both Northwestern (7-2-1 overall) and Southern Lehigh (5-3-1 overall) moved to 5-1-1 in the league.

Palmerton-Bangor

Beth Morgan had two goals and an assist to help propel Palmerton to a 4-1 Colonial League victory over Bangor.

Nataly Walters and Emily Houser also tallied for the Blue Bombers, who remained undefeated at 8-0.

Palmerton’s Sam Perloni, Riley Gerhard and Emma Martinez all added assists, while goalie Emma Snyder recorded 13 saves.

Palmerton improved to 6-0 in the league, while Bangor slipped to 2-6 overall, and 1-5 in the CL.

CROSS COUNTRY

Lehighton, Tamaqua

at Haven Invitational

Lehighton and Tamaqua took part in the Schuylkill Haven Invitational.

The Tamaqua girls placed second, while the Blue Raider boys and Lehighton boys earned third and fourth, respectively.

Tamaqua’s Anthony Marchetti finished second in the boys race in a time of 19:33, just two seconds behind Minersville’s Keegan Dube. The Indians’ Elijah Pagotto turned in an eighth-place showing, while Tamaqua’s Levi Kunkel followed in ninth.

In the girls competition, the Raiders’ Mia Jones took third in a time of 25:14. Teammate Samantha Plasha finished ninth, while Lehighton’s Katie Wojton ended in 11th place.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Pen Argyl

Jim Thorpe posted a 4-1 victory over Pen Argyl.

The Olympians swept singles play, as Tara McLean, Hailey Trine and Ashlynn Miller all recorded wins.

Thorpe won for the fourth straight time and moved to 7-5 overall, while Pen Argyl fell to 1-9.

VOLLEYBALL

Pleasant Valley

at So. Lehigh Invitational

Pleasant Valley participated in a 10-team tournament at Southern Lehigh, and finished second to the host team.

In pool play, the Bears earned victories over Pottsgrove (25-12, 25-18), Upper Dublin (25-22, 25-19) and Quakertown (25-12, 25-14) and tied Southern Lehigh (25-18, 20-25).

PV then defeated Pennsburg 25-20 in the semifinals, which set up a rematch with the hosts Spartans in the finals. The Spartans earned the title, topping the Bears by scores of 25-19 and 25-22.

Brianna Bruckman had 43 assists, 32 digs and three aces in the tourney for PV, while Nora Jones collected 36 digs, 15 kills and three aces.

Lexi Womack finished with 30 digs, 25 kills and three assists), with Sarah Ballek contributing 18 blocks and 16 kills.

The Bears also received 17 kills, 11 blocks, 11 assists and six aces from Hannah Akob, and 24 assists from Alexis Wilkes.
