Spike strips halt fleeing suspect in Schuylkill Co.

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks said spike strips needed to be deployed on the highway to stop a fleeing driver in an incident at 6:54 p.m. Sept. 5.

Police said they spotted a Dodge Durango traveling at a high rate of speed that was reported to be implicated in a retail theft at Kohl’s in Norwegian Township and attempted to make a traffic stop on Route 61 in West Brunswick Township. The Durango fled at a high rate of speed through Schuylkill County.

Police said the vehicle turned onto Interstate 78 and traveled through Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties. State police from Hamburg, Fogelsville and Belfast assisted.

The spike strips were used and eventually caused the driver to lose control of the Durango, which struck guide rails and a guide wire before coming to a halt.

Police said the driver was arraigned and committed to the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, in lieu of $200,000 straight bail.

Police said more suspected stolen items, believed to be taken from home improvement stores, were discovered inside the vehicle.
