The ample rainfall recently didn’t submerge the Franklin Township Fire Company on Wednesday.

Rather, it was a steadfast drove of senior citizens who flooded its quarters to gain information on businesses and services available in Carbon County.

More than 1,000 seniors withstood the rain to see what they could learn at the 12th Annual Carbon County Senior Expo, co-hosted by state Rep. Doyle Heffley and state Sen. John Yudichak.

Amid the fanfare, Richard Domonkos of Albrightsville chatted with Heffley.

“He’s going to help me with my renter’s rebate,” Domonkos said. “He will help me fill out a form.”

Heffley thanked the sponsors and the fire company for allowing them to host the event.

“It’s a wonderful turnout,” Heffley said. “It’s a very informational expo.”

Heffley said that was the goal for the expo.

“In a lot of ways, this is like a reunion,” he said. “This is a wonderful event.”

Cindy Donovan of Lehighton took advantage of the plethora of services.

“I take care of my 93-year-old mother with dementia,” Donovan said. “I was looking to see if I could find some respite care places.”

Much like her contemporaries, Donovan enjoyed the free lunches.

Yudichak said the event was in many ways bittersweet in that it marked the final time he will be a part of it.

“It’s a heartwarming moment for me,” Yudichak said. “I made a lot of friends over the years; many of them are here.”

Yudichak lauded the event, as well as all the vendors and services made available to the senior citizens.

“This is a really lovely community event,” he said. “It’s about family and neighbors getting together.”

The expo featured more than 60 vendors from the Carbon County area who presented information on their programs and services.

A prescription drug drop-off box was on-site for seniors to dispose of their unwanted or expired medications.

Legislators also collected nonperishable food items to donate to a local food bank.
