HALO stand sells gyros to help children

It’s a popular treat that satisfies the taste buds of people of all ages.

So good are the gyros at the Helping Assist Local Organizations stand that it often attracts repeat customers.

Sometimes on the same day, no less, according to Jill Kuzo, president of HALO, which will once again set up its stand at this year’s Palmerton Community Festival.

“Everybody loves them,” Kuzo said. “It’s a great feeling knowing people come back sometimes more than once in a day because they love them.”

Kuzo, who has run the gyros stand at the festival for more than 10 years, said the gyros are made of all beef, which is cooked and put on bread, before being topped with sauce, tomato, onions, and lettuce.

“It’s a very quick process; we’ve got it down to about 30 seconds,” she said. “We’ve got to be quick because our line is so long.”

Kuzo said HALO fundraises and donates money to area organizations to assist them in their fundraising efforts.

“I love doing the festival, I love meeting people, I love donating to other people,” she said. “The fact that people love it makes me love it.”

Kuzo said she plans to donate proceeds raised at the festival to the Palmerton Area High School Class of 2023, as well as the Lehigh Valley Yankees Fan Club (special needs’ children who play baseball).

Last year, she said she bought Christmas gifts that were donated to families in need.

Kuzo urged customers to get their gyros while they can.

“It’s only once a year we do it,” she said. “You don’t want to miss them.”
