Walker Twp. targets impaired drivers
Walker Township Police Chief Doug Springer and Officer Harry Brown presented information at the Walker Township Supervisors meeting last week about the North Central Highway Safety program in Walker Township.
“The program gives us opportunities to run DUI checkpoints and DUI rovings here in Walker Township,” Brown said.
North Central will provide the extra officers. For checkpoints, it brings a DUI trailer, marks the highway, has EMT’s on-site and a phlebotomist on site. Not only is it good catching impaired drivers, it also can catch drivers with no insurance, suspended drivers, drugs in the cars and more.
A DUI roving is done during certain times, and usually just one officer will be out patrolling the roads, looking for impaired drivers. They are usually done in four-hour blocks.
“North Central Highway Safety covers Schuylkill County, along with other counties,” Brown said. “They are located out of Pottsville. I am the administrator for us, and I work with Deputy Chief William Kattner of the Branch Riley Police Department who is a coordinator for us.”
The Highway Safety program is a grant program that will reimburse Walker Township for salaries, at time-and-a-half, for the officers to conduct the DUI checkpoints and rovings. The township will pay the officers for the work, and the Highway Safety program will reimburse the township.
“The township is not out any money for putting out extra DUI rovings or if we do a DUI checkpoint,” Brown said.
Other business
• Springer reported that in August there was a crash, a disturbance, a fraud report and a traffic arrest. There were multiple vehicles pulled over, with several warnings issued.
• Electrical work was done on the Wildcat Park Pavilion. Some of the wiring was redone in the electrical box, and a ground bar was installed. Somewhere between the pavilion and the municipal building, the underground wiring has a break, which workers were not able to find.
“We have a park rental in October,” township Roadmaster Chad Felty said. “Once that is done, I plan to dig a new trench and lay in conduit and run new electrical wiring.”
