August 31, 1979 - Lehighton’s field hockey team opens its season successfully, pulling out a 2-0 victory over visiting Southern Lehigh. The game, played at Baer Memorial Park, is scoreless at halftime but the Indians record a pair of second-half goals to gain the win. Debbie Tanzos gets Lehighton on the board first, giving her team the only goal it would need. The Indians, coached by Sharon Elder, receive some insurance later in the half when Robin Bottcher puts one past the Spartans goaltender.
