Palmerton woman’s request — vanilla cake on 103rd birthday
Asked what she wanted for her upcoming 103rd birthday, Edith George made it easy.
“When you live to be as old as I am, you don’t say you want this or that,” George said. “You don’t really need anything. Just take each day as it comes.”
George, born and raised in Palmerton, has lived at the Scenic View Personal Care Home since July after selling her home in Little Gap.
She hopes to celebrate her Sept. 5 birthday with a delicious slice of vanilla cake.
Growing up in Palmerton, George said she helped her parents farm before marrying Harlan George, a technician for the former New Jersey Zinc Co.
“I got married and worked in Palmerton as a machine operator in a sewing factory,” George said.
Harlan passed away in 2012.
Together they have one daughter, Devoe, who married Alton Snyder; and one grandson, Randy Snyder.
“I still feel good,” George said. “I have no aches or pains, I walk every day and I’m not on any medication.”
Though memories come and go, George fondly recalled square dancing with Harlan every Saturday night.
“We would find out where there was a dance and we would go,” she said. “Anywhere that had dancing, we would be there.”
In addition to her love of square dancing, George said she was passionate about gardening, having grown lettuce, cabbage and tomatoes, among other vegetables.
Since moving to the Scenic View Personal Care Home last month, George has enjoyed taking part in many of the facility’s events.
“Edith really likes the coffee socials, playing ball and listening to our live music,” owner Melissa Levan said. “When she’s not out enjoying those events, she likes to spend quiet time in her room.”
While her taste in music spans a variety of genres, there is one style that sticks out in her mind.
“I really like the polka,” she said, “but I’ll listen to anything.”
