Luzerne teen charged in shooting

A 17-year-old Luzerne County teen has been charged with homicide and related offenses, for the shooting death of a 17-year-old girl.

State police at Hazleton identified the suspect as Alan Jay Meyers, of Black Creek Township. He has been charged as an adult with criminal homicide, possession of firearms by a minor, and tampering with evidence. He was arraigned before a district judge and remanded to the county prison in Wilkes-Barre. Because of the homicide charge, no bail was set.

Troopers said on Saturday at 5:06 a.m. they were dispatched for a shooting at 14 Sand Hollow Drive, in Butler Township. The victim sustained a gunshot to the head. She was flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where she died at 6:18 a.m.

Media reports indicate the victim was a cheerleader for the Hazleton Area School District and that grief counselors were available at the school for students.

Troopers did not release any other details concerning the shooting except to say updates will be available as to not jeopardize the investigation.
