Lehighton man charged in Estes fire

Mahoning Township Police have charged a Lehighton man with arson in connection with the fire Wednesday night at the Estes Express Lines terminal in Mahoning Township.

Anthony Dick, 39, was arraigned Saturday morning in front of on-call District Judge Joseph Homanko. He has been charged with two felony counts of arson and a felony count of risking catastrophe.

He is Carbon County Correctional Facility, unable to post $100,000 bail.

It was the second fire this month on the property, formerly the New England Motor Freight terminal, on Mahoning Drive. On Aug. 11 a building and several trailers were damaged.

On Wednesday four trailers were destroyed.

When firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 7:30 Wednesday night, Mahoning Valley Fire Chief Mark Ebbert said two trailers were on fire. The fire quickly spread to two more, destroying all four. Items on the loading dock were also damaged.

Firefighters remained on scene until 2 a.m. Thursday.

No one was injured.

The state police fire marshal and Mahoning police department are investigating.

The Lehighton, Franklin Township, East Penn Township, Bowmanstown, Parryville and Jim Thorpe fire companies responded, as did Lehighton and Mahoning Valley ambulance.
